Helen Ploderer-King is a free lance journalist, author and translator
specialised in wine growing, tourism and gastronomy as well as an avid cook.
Life has taken her to many
places, from Alberta where she was born, to her present place of residency in
Salzburg, Austria.
After the Interpreters
School at the University of Geneva she graduated from the Hotel Management
School of Lausanne and moved to the Côte d’Azur where she was management
assistant at the Hotel du Cap – Eden Roc. In 1981 she relocated to Paris
for 1 ½ years and a one year sojourn brought her to Montreal where she worked
for Chateau stores of Canada. In February 1983 off she went to live in
Singapore in the hospitality industry with her husband.
In June 1984 she
landed in Austria where she decided in 1986 to settle in Salzburg with her
family. After 11 years with her own textile company when she designed and made
exclusive children’s clothing she decided that her call in life was destined to
tourism and gastronomy.
2004 Helen spent 2
years in the Provence where she not only catered for such world renowned
vineyards such as Château la Nerthe and Chäteau Mont Redon but also translated
web sites not only for the city of Orange but also for several Bed &
Breakfasts and wine growers in the region.
Returning to Salzburg
in October of 2006 she set her mind to writing the first and only gastronomic
guide to Salzburg – “Feinspitz in Salzburg, A taste of Salzburg” –
which turned out to be a great success not only for the city and its
restaurants but also for gourmet lovers.
A second book –
“Signs of Salzburg” - concerning the guild signs of Salzburg is completed and
will appear at the end of 2009. “The Getreidegasse” is expected to be published
in the spring of 2009 as well as a follow-up to her Gastronomic guide to
Salzburg will also appear at the end of 2009.
Among her other
activities she also writes a cooking and household column for one of the main
newspapers in Austria based in Salzburg which appears weekly.
Books
Feinspitz in
Salzburg – A Taste of Salzburg – August 2007, Anton Pustet Verlag
My first book, “Feinspitz in Salzburg – A Taste of Salzburg” was a gastronomic guide to the city of
Salzburg which turned out to be a best seller in the city. I had a multitude of
reasons for writing this book among which was my love of food and the city and
as well as being the first and only of its kind for the city of my dreams. The
book was subsidised to some extent by the Chamber of Commerce, the Old City
Marketing Office and the Tourist Office of the city.
Signs of Salzburg
– Appearing at the end of 2009 – Colorama Verlag
My second book about the guild signs of Salzburg will appear in 2009.
Salzburg is a wonderland not only for Helen but for millions of tourists that
visit it every year. Each and every sign hanging on the small and winding
streets is unique and until now no one has had the time or the interest to
write about them. So Helen took her time.
Die
Getreidegasse – Appearing in Spring 2009 – Colorama Verlag
“Getreidegasse” is the fascinating main street of Salzburg which origins
date back 2000 years. Helen was asked by a well known publisher (Colorama) in Salzburg to recreate in words the
experience of walking down this historical passageway. “The Getreidegasse” will
appear in Spring 2009.
Gourmet in Salzburg
– appearing late 2009 – Colorama Verlag
Due to the fact that “Feinspitz in Salzburg” was such a success and that
the gastronomic industry is constantly moving Helen moves with the times and
her second food guide to Salzburg – Gourmet in Salzburg – will
probably appear before the end of 2009.
Helen also writes a weekly column in a widely distributed newspaper in
Austria, based in Salzburg, about household and cooking tips.
